This strawberry yogurt frosting doesn’t taste like buttercream if that’s what you’re wondering! It’s as straightforward as it sounds. Thick, tangy, and creamy yogurt is mixed with freeze dried strawberry powder for a spreadable topping to your cakes, cupcakes, or eat it as is.
Don’t you hate it when you buy a big tub of yogurt and forget about the expiration date? That’s me. So to help me quickly finish the yogurt without wasting, I turned it into an easy “frosting” or yogurt topping for a cake (and shared it with friends)
It’s like Greek yogurt but THICKER. This recipe was inspired by “Labneh”, a Middle Eastern “cheese” that’s made by straining the liquid whey from yogurt until it’s really thick like room temperature cream cheese.
How To Use Strawberry Yogurt Frosting
Add as a topping for a single layer cake like in m photo
Frost cupcakes or top soft cookies
Eat it like thick Greek yogurt with other fruit toppings or granola
Freeze it into a yogurt bark
Storage/Yield
This recipe makes about 180 grams of yogurt frosting. Enough to cover a single 6” cake layer on the top like in my photo.
Equipment You’ll Need
Kitchen Scale, to measure the ingredients
Teaspoon, to measure the vanilla
strainer, to filter the yogurt
coffee filter, to filer the yogurt
small bowl, to catch the liquid whey
rubber spatula and mixing bowl, to mix the frosting ingredients
Ingredients You’ll Need
300 grams Plain yogurt (about 140g after straining)
30 grams Powdered sugar (if using sweetened yogurt, then skip this)
10 grams freeze dried strawberries (blended until powder form)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
Set a metal strainer on top of a bowl (to catch the liquid whey) with a coffee filter overnight.
Add the 300 grams plain yogurt into the coffee filter and you can leave it uncovered or covered in the fridge overnight (about 8-12 hours).
It should be about 140 grams after straining.
Blend the 10 grams freeze fried strawberries until powdery.
In a mixing bowl, add the strained yogurt, 30 grams powdered sugar or sweetener of your choice (if using sweetened yogurt, then skip this), powdered freeze dried strawberries, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional). Mix until incorporated and it’s ready to frost!

BTS: Duchess (1 of our 2 furbabies) had to get 3 teefies removed yesterday. I felt sooo guilty when we dropped her off at the vet yesterday morning because she just watched us leave her there :( but she did so well! Here is a pic of her after we picked her up and brought her home. She’s really loopy but still demanding scritches on the floor. LOL The doctor prescribed lots of hugs and kisses <3
everything here is perfection- i love the photos too <3
